Katie Hughes, MSW
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (VA: 0904007964)

I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) with over ten years of experience providing therapy. I currently provide individual therapy to adults with a specialization in perinatal/ maternal mental health. I understand that it can be overwhelming to seek out therapy, and I am committed to providing a safe and compassionate environment where we can explore your concerns and begin working towards change. Social justice advocacy is important to me (and is why I choose to pursue a graduate degree in social work), my office is an affirming space for all individuals!

Education and Experience: I earned my MSW from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2009, and I have been licensed as a clinical social worker (LCSW) in the Commonwealth of Virginia since 2012. Since obtaining my graduate degree, I have provided therapy services in a variety of settings, including university counseling centers, VA Hospitals, and community mental health agencies. In addition to providing therapy, I hold a faculty appointment teaching undergraduate social work students. I have specialized training in maternal mental health, and I have completed a Trauma and Resilience-Informed Care Certification through the NASW-VA/Metro DC.

Clinical Orientation: I take an integrative approach to practicing therapy.  This means I draw on a variety of interventions and tailor my work to meet the unique needs of each client. I will always provide a safe space to focus on immediate needs and enhance your current coping skills.   I have training in providing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal process therapy (IPT).  I may also explore current and past relationships and experiences to better understand how these may be continuing to impact current stressors and patterns of behavior.  I also believe it is important to look at the whole person and to understand how the many facets of your situation and identities may be impacting your concerns. Throughout treatment, I will check in with you to make sure your needs are being met. I believe it is essential that we have a strong therapeutic relationship so that you feel safe and comfortable discussing your concerns and working towards change.
